May–June and September–October are perfect: warm, far fewer crowds, lower prices and hotels available. July–August is brutally hot (38°C+) and Santorini/Mykonos reach capacity. For the Athens Acropolis: arrive at opening (8am) to beat heat and crowds. Winter is mild on the coast and great for budget travellers.
Meteora monasteries require covered shoulders and long skirts or trousers for women — men need long trousers. Skirts and wraps are often available to borrow at the entrance. The best time to visit Meteora is early morning or late afternoon when the light is golden and coach groups haven't arrived.
Use the Athens port of Piraeus for ferries to most islands. Hellenic Seaways and Blue Star Ferries are reliable. Book tickets 2–4 weeks ahead for July–August. For Santorini, the Blue Star ferry takes 8 hrs — book a cabin for overnight crossings. Flying from Athens to islands (Sky Express, Aegean) is fast but costs more.
Greeks eat late — dinner rarely before 9pm. Lunch (2–4pm) is the main meal. The best tavernas have no menus outside — ask what the daily catch is. Sharing meze is the norm. Never rush a meal. Ouzo is always served with food (never alone). Tipping 10% is appreciated but not mandatory.
Greece is affordable if you avoid tourist traps. Street souvlaki costs €3–4 (vs €18 at a restaurant). Visit museums on the first Sunday of each month for free entry (including the Acropolis). Rent a scooter on islands instead of taxis. Stay in Fira on Santorini rather than Oia for the same caldera view at half the price.
Data is cheap in Greece. Buy a local SIM at Athens airport for €10–15 (Cosmote or Vodafone GR) with 10–30GB valid for 30 days. Alternatively, activate an eSIM before you depart — it works the moment you land. Airport Wi-Fi is free at Athens Eleftherios Venizelos. Most cafes and hotels offer free Wi-Fi.
