The Colosseum, Vatican and Borghese Gallery sell out weeks in advance in peak season (June–August). Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead for July. The Borghese Gallery strictly limits 360 visitors per slot — book the moment your travel dates are confirmed.
April–May and September–October are ideal: warm weather, smaller crowds and lower prices. July–August are brutally hot in Rome and Florence (35°C+) and the Amalfi Coast is gridlocked. For skiing the Dolomites: January–March.
Cover your shoulders and knees when entering any church, including St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican and the Duomo in Florence. Carry a lightweight scarf or buy a €2 paper shawl at the entrance. Refusing entry is common and embarrassing.
Never eat at restaurants within 50m of a major monument — they're tourist traps. Walk two streets away and look for menus in Italian only. Lunch is the main meal (12:30–14:30). Cappuccino after noon is a tourist tell. Espresso at the bar costs €1 vs €4 seated.
Italy's high-speed rail (Trenitalia Frecciarossa) connects Rome–Florence (1.5 hrs) and Rome–Milan (3 hrs). Book rail tickets online 30–60 days ahead for 50%+ discounts. For the Amalfi Coast, take the SITA bus — driving the cliff road is not recommended.
Italy is mostly cashless in cities but carry €20–30 cash for small towns, markets and some trattorias. Tipping is not mandatory — round up the bill or leave 5–10% for exceptional service. Watch for "coperto" (cover charge, €1–3 per person) added to restaurant bills.
