Essential advice from travellers who know Romania well.
Romania uses the Romanian Leu (RON), not the Euro. ATMs are widely available in cities. Budget around $40–60/day for comfortable mid-range travel. Card payments accepted most places.
Trains connect major cities but are slow. For Transylvania day trips, book a guided tour from Bucharest — it's often cheaper and easier than renting a car. Taxis are very affordable; always use Bolt or Uber apps.
Romanian is the official language — a Latin-based language. English is widely spoken in Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj and by anyone under 40. Learn a few Romanian words — locals absolutely love it.
Romania is very safe for tourists — safer than many Western European capitals. Standard precautions apply: watch for pickpockets in crowded Bucharest markets and avoid unlicensed taxi drivers at the airport.
Try sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls), mici (grilled minced meat rolls), mamamliga (polenta) and cozonac (sweet bread). Romanian wine is excellent and criminally underrated. A full restaurant meal costs $8–15.
