Danube Delta Travel FAQ

Everything you need to know before visiting Europe's most spectacular wetland.

When is the best time to visit the Danube Delta?
April to June is the absolute best time — pelicans are nesting, migratory birds arrive in huge numbers, and the delta is lush and green. July–August is warm but can be hot and buggy; bring repellent. September is underrated — great weather, fewer tourists, and golden light for photography. Avoid winter (November–March) unless you specifically want to see the red-breasted goose flocks.
How do I get from Tulcea into the delta?
All movement inside the Danube Delta is by boat. From Tulcea, you can take regular ferry services (navrom.ro) to villages like Sfântu Gheorghe, Sulina and Chilia. For tours, boats depart from Tulcea harbour every morning. Most guesthouses in delta villages arrange private boat transfers. Book in advance during June–August as demand is high.
Is the Danube Delta safe to visit?
Absolutely safe. Romania is a low-crime country and the delta is a protected natural area. The main nuisance is mosquitoes, especially from June to August — bring strong repellent (DEET-based) and light long-sleeved clothing for evening boat trips. Always use licensed boat operators and wear life jackets in smaller boats. Avoid swimming in the main channels due to boat traffic.
What wildlife will I definitely see?
Year-round residents include Great White Pelicans, Purple Herons, Great White Egrets, Cormorants, Marsh Harriers and White-tailed Eagles. In spring and summer, you'll also see baby pelicans, hundreds of nesting herons, and if you explore Letea Forest — wild horses. Fish like carp and pike are visible in shallow clear water channels. Wild boar and foxes inhabit the forested islands.
Can I visit the Danube Delta on a day trip from Bucharest?
Technically possible but not recommended — it's a 4-hour drive each way from Bucharest, which leaves very little time in the delta. A minimum of 2 days (1 night in Tulcea or a delta guesthouse) is ideal. Three or more days lets you explore multiple branches and villages properly. If you're short on time, combine with the Black Sea coast — Mamaia and Constanta are only 1.5h from Tulcea.
