Make the most of France with these practical tips from seasoned travellers and local guides.
The Eiffel Tower summit, Versailles and the Louvre can have 2–3 hour queues in summer. Book skip-the-line tickets at least 2 weeks ahead. For July–August, book 4–6 weeks in advance. Timed entry has become mandatory for most major Paris attractions.
France's TGV high-speed rail connects Paris to Lyon in 2 hrs, Marseille in 3 hrs, and Bordeaux in 2 hrs. Far faster than flying once you factor in airports. The Paris Metro is excellent and covers all major sights. Rent a car for Provence and the countryside.
Lunch (12:00–14:00) is the main meal. Set menus (menus du jour) at lunchtime offer incredible value — often 3 courses for €15–25. Don't expect to rush. Dinner is rarely before 7:30pm. Asking for a doggy bag was once taboo but is now increasingly accepted.
May–June and September–October offer ideal weather with fewer crowds. Lavender blooms in Provence mid-June to late July. Paris in August is quiet with locals away — but many small restaurants close. Ski season in the Alps runs December–April. Avoid Paris in July–August unless you book far ahead.
France uses the Euro (€). Tipping is not obligatory — a "service compris" charge is included in restaurant bills by law. Leaving €1–3 for good service is appreciated but not expected. Credit cards are widely accepted everywhere including small bistros. Carry some cash for markets and rural areas.
Always begin interactions with "Bonjour, Madame/Monsieur" — this single courtesy dramatically improves your reception. Even a few words of French are highly appreciated. In Paris, many locals speak English but appreciate the effort. Outside major cities, English is less common — carry a translation app.
Pack comfortable walking shoes — Paris's cobblestones are merciless. A light jacket year-round as evenings can be cool. French dress standards are smart-casual; avoid sportswear in restaurants. Bring a reusable water bottle — Paris's tap water is excellent and free water fountains are everywhere.
Get an eSIM or French SIM for affordable data. Download the SNCF Connect app for train bookings, Citymapper for Paris navigation, and Google Maps offline maps. The Paris Musées app gives access to museum collections. Many museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month.
