Navigate Spain like a local with these essential tips from seasoned travellers and local guides.
The Alhambra in Granada is Spain's most visited monument and tickets sell out weeks in advance — sometimes months. There's a strict daily limit of 6,600 visitors. Book via GetYourGuide or the official website as soon as you know your travel dates. Do not arrive without tickets expecting to get in.
Lunch is from 2:00–4:00pm and the main meal of the day. Dinner rarely begins before 9:00pm, and 10:00pm is perfectly normal. The afternoon siesta (roughly 2–5pm) means many small shops close. Embrace the rhythm — you'll eat better and enjoy more authentic experiences than those who eat at "tourist hours."
In Andalusia (Seville, Granada), tapas are often served free with drinks — a wonderful tradition. In the Basque Country, pintxos (pronounced "pinchos") are small bites on bread sold by piece from bar counters. In Barcelona and Madrid, tapas are ordered and paid for. Each region has its own bar-hopping etiquette.
Spain's AVE high-speed rail is superb — Madrid to Barcelona in 2.5 hrs, Madrid to Seville in 2.5 hrs. For Andalusia's smaller towns, rental cars give far more flexibility. Budget airlines Vueling and Iberia connect major cities cheaply. Barcelona and Madrid's metro systems are excellent for getting around their cities.
April–June and September–October are ideal — warm but not scorching, with fewer crowds. Andalusia and Madrid in July–August can exceed 40°C — brutal for sightseeing. The Canary Islands and Balearics are pleasant year-round. Semana Santa (Easter week) brings spectacular processions in Seville but massively inflated prices.
Spain uses the Euro (€) and is generally more affordable than France or the UK. A menu del día (3-course lunch with wine) typically costs €10–15. Tipping is appreciated but modest — round up or leave €1–2 at restaurants. Card payments are widely accepted. ATMs are plentiful in cities. Barcelona tends to be pricier than the rest of Spain.
Gaudí's masterpiece is still under construction and won't be fully completed until 2026. Book the tower access add-on — either the Nativity or Passion tower — for elevated views over Barcelona. Morning light on the Nativity façade is magical. The audioguide is excellent and worth adding to any visit.
Avoid tourist flamenco shows in shopping centres. Seek out tablaos (specialist flamenco venues) in Seville, Granada's Sacromonte cave venues, or Madrid's historic tablaos like Corral de la Morería. An intimate setting with 30–50 guests creates a raw, emotional connection to this deeply Spanish art form that large tourist shows simply cannot match.
