Essential advice for first-time and returning visitors.
Turkey uses the Turkish Lira (TRY). Withdraw from ATMs on arrival for the best rates — avoid airport exchange bureaus. Cards are widely accepted in cities; carry cash for bazaars and small restaurants.
April–June and September–October are the sweet spots — mild weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. July and August are scorching (40°C in Cappadocia) and peak tourist season. Ski season in Uludağ runs December–March.
Cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques — free headscarves and wraps are usually provided at the entrance. Outside of religious sites, Turkey is relaxed about dress, especially in Istanbul and coastal resorts.
Istanbul has an excellent Metro + Tram network — buy an Istanbulkart for cheaper fares. For Cappadocia, Pamukkale and Ephesus, book day tours from Istanbul or fly domestically (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AnadoluJet are affordable).
Don't leave without trying: iskender kebab, şiş kebab, balık ekmek (fish sandwich on the Galata Bridge), menemen (egg dish), Turkish breakfast spread, künefe dessert, and of course — real Turkish coffee with lokum.
Pick up a local SIM at the airport (Turkcell, Vodafone, Türk Telekom) for around $10–$15 for 10GB. Alternatively, an eSIM from Airalo covers Turkey with 1GB for ~$4.50 and activates before you land.
